FRAGRANT WISTERIA

Starting mid April, wisteria starts to bloom into fragrant violet bunches that hang like grapes from vines above inviting streets and from historic structures, enticing you to come close for a sniff of their sweet perfume that permeates the air around you.

You can find wisteria along Via Margutta (a charming oasis of historic beauty near Spanish Steps), next to the Vittorio Emanuele Monument in Piazza Venezia along the steps that lead up to Capitoline Hill, around the Roman Forum, and tucked away in various neighborhoods in Rome.

Via Margutta, 51 wast the famous (and actual) address in the movie classic Roman Holiday / Vacanze Romane starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck.  A visit to Via Margutta is featured in Stefano Rome Tours VACANZE ROMANE TOUR

Orange blossoms with their distinctive delightful fragrance invite you for a visit to the Orange Garden (Giardino degli Aranci) on Aventine Hill in the spring.

Panoramic views of Rome from the park terrace, shady benches beneath umbrella pines, the tranquility of the park, and fragrant blossom flowers from the orange trees make this a perfect respite from the busy city below.

Nearby in Piazza of the Knights of Malta is the “Secret Keyhole” that surprises many visitors who did not know what to expect when urged to take a peek through a very special keyhole.  Don’t worry if you can’t find the special keyhole… just look for the line of people who are already peeking through it.

You can find out more about the Secret Keyhole here, or surprise yourself!

CHERRY BLOSSOMS

 .

.

For a brief period from mid-March through the first week of April (depending on the weather), you can enjoy the blossoming of Sakura, the Japanese cherry trees that blossom along the lake in the EUR district of Rome. These cherry blossoms that line the artificial lake of EUR are a tribute to the Japanese tradition of Hanami, a festival that celebrates the arrival of Spring.

Spring is celebrated throughout Italy with festivals that often last for days.

In Rome, the arrival of Spring is celebrated by turning the elegant Spanish Steps into a blaze of color with thousands of pots containing shrubs of bright red and vibrant pink azalea placed on the steps in late April – and lasting until early May (coinciding with the blooming period of the flowers).  The exact dates vary every year depending on the weather and when the azaleas begin to bloom.

THE ROSE GARDEN

Rose Garden on Aventine Hill - Stefano's RomeCabs

.

One of Rome’s best-kept spring secrets is the Rose Garden (Roseto Comunale) located at the foot of Aventine Hill across the street from Circus Maximus.

During the warm spring months from late April to mid-June, a profusion of more than 1,000 rose varieties bloom in an abundance of colors and fragrances, turning this little-known park one of the most romantic, tranquil, and delightful places to visit in the spring.

The Rose Garden usually opens between April 21 and June 19 during the flowering period, on average from 8:30 AM to 7:30 PM with free entry.

All over Rome you will be greeted with colorful flowers either in window flower pots, or growing on vines or branches.   If you come to Rome this spring, take a moment to smell the roses, the wisteria, or just capture the beauty around you in a keepsake photograph.

With all the vibrant colors, delicate flowers, and sweet fragrances, no wonder spring is the most beautiful reason to visit Rome.
